I maintain an information resource center for people trying to understand the causes and alternatives to baldness. As you probably know, there is much misinformation about this condition, often generated by companies making unsubstantiated claims about products they sell. It’s hard for the consumer to know what’s real and what’s not.

Example of Typical Male Pattern Baldness

Example of Frontal Male Pattern Balding

Once you’ve lost a significant amount of hair, the only alternatives to just accepting baldness are cover ups, like camouflage, hair systems and hair transplantation.

“Remember the sports adage, The best offense is a good defense.” Obviously, everyone would like to have their own growing hair. That’s why hair loss prevention; holding on to the hair you have should be your first approach. I’m convinced that a safe, effective treatment like laser therapy makes so much sense.

Q. Hair Systems are artificial. Does anyone get comfortable with such a product?

A. As contact lenses and dentures are also ‘artificial,’ hairpieces are something the wearer learns to adapt his life to. Like wearing contact lenses, you may only be frustrated with care and maintenance a small percentage of the time.

Q. I wear a Hair System. Can I continue to wear a hair system after I undergo a hair transplant?

A.
Having worn a hair system for 15 years prior to my first hair transplant, I can answer this from experience. I was in the business of representing quality hair systems with myself as my best model. So it was essential I learn how to adapt it over the new growing hair. I devised a strategy for wearers to transition out of their system gradually and we’ve taught this method to hair system professionals all over the country. Contact me at infor@cclaserhair.com for details about this procedure.

If your current hair system technician does not want to cooperate with a transition, I am knowledgeable about hair professionals throughout the nation who will be happy to help you with the transition.

Q. What exactly is hair transplantation and how come some are so detectable?

The procedure is typically an outpatient process done in the transplant surgeon’s office. Usually, a strip of permanent hair-bearing tissue (that which is not affected by the balding process) is removed and divided into what are called follicular units. These naturally occurring bundles of one to four hairs are implanted strategically to re-create a natural growth pattern to blend in with the reaming hair. The area where the strip is taken is sutured closed and will become difficult to detect, depending on the skills of the surgeon and the post operative behavior of the patient.

Dear John,
I’m in the Charlotte area.  Can you recommend a reputable company for me to go talk to about my hair loss?  It’s been bothering me for a long time and I want to do something before it’s too late! (It runs in my family.)

Bill –
The most qualified person I can recommend is a long-time colleague of mine, Dr. Bruce Marko. Besides being a top-notch hair transplant surgeon, he is versed in the pros and cons of minoxidil, finasteride and is a big advocate of Laser Hair Therapy. Give him a call and let him educate you about what will be best for your situation.
